Working age

The Aviva Real Retirement study into attitudes towards working beyond retirement age (your report, 3 July) is interesting.

It might be more interesting to do a study on the attitudes of those already a few years into "retirement" when perhaps they are missing the socialising benefits of work and the opportunity to exercise hard-earned skills. Their attitude to the extra income they could enjoy would also be worth studying.

Younger people often tell me that due to mortgage and other financial commitments they will have to work well into their 60s.

Unless they do something to help change present attitudes to the employment of older people I tell them that the prospect is unlikely. Employers, and it seems the TUC, are united in their Dickensian attitude to the idea of employing older people.

Unless attitudes change there ar going to be more elderly poor in the future.
