Word play

I found your article on the demise of “obsolete” words (22 August) of great interest and it occurs to me that a great many not so obsolete words are in danger of falling into desuetude.

These include “standing/ sitting”, which appear to have been replaced by “stood/ sat”, as in “We were stood there…”

I also notice that actors, whom one would think should know better, seem unable to avoid solecisms such as “between you and I” and, “for he and I”. Still, mustn’t complain. It is gaffes like these that keep my “little grey cells” ticking over.
