Wind section

It was a rare privilege to hear Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ in Edinburgh last Thursday evening. It's a difficult enough work to pull off at the best of times, but on this occasion the Rattle-esque Ticciati's wonderful performance was marred not by infelicities in the chorus or the marvellous SCO, but by the Usher Hall itself.

Something has to be done about the intrusive air-conditioning system, which quite obliterated some of the quieter passages. "The rushing mighty wind" took me back to Mendelssohn's Elijah. The performance was ruined. I'm off to Perth Concert Hall: no such troubles there.
