Wind battle

It was with satisfaction that I read that the Friends of the Great Glen had submitted a petition to the Scottish Parliament (“Fresh plea to stop wind farms”, 27 May).

Notwithstanding the excellent work of such organisations as the John Muir Trust and the Mountaineering Council of Scotland in opposing the industrialisation of our wild land, what is really going to have an impact is a growing groundswell of public opinion which the politicians can no longer ignore.

The persistent refusal of those in power and those who represent the interests of the corporate energy sector to provide impartial answers to our legitimate questions about the effectiveness of onshore wind electricity generation and its consequences is unacceptable to those of us who no longer consent to being powerless in the face of such political and corporate arrogance.

Such a lack of accountability and transparency on the part of those who promise us a truly democratic Scotland does little to promote the Nationalist cause.

Independence surely means freedom not just from Westminster but from constant submission to the demands of corporate interests.
