Whisky and wry

I strongly suspect that First Minister Alex Salmond’s comment about “a nation of drunks” (your report, 1 May) was said with a wry smile, which obviously can’t be conveyed through the medium of print.

Exaggeration for humorous effect is a typical Scottish trait. Let’s face it, Andrew Carnegie’s observation that “golf is an indispensable adjunct to high civilisation” could only be taken entirely seriously by Donald Trump.

The facts about our alcohol misuse speak for themselves: one in four men and one in ten women drink alcohol at levels which endanger their health.

Translated into more everyday terms, this means that a significant number of your male work colleagues can’t function without an alcohol support system, and your female co-workers are catching up fast.
