What’s the law?

As an amateur genealogist with ancestry from several Scottish fishing villages, I have often seen 19th-century death certificates for drowned fishermen bearing the phrase, “body not recovered”, or words to that effect.

So I was surprised to read about Megan Willdig from Dumfries and Galloway, whose partner was lost overboard in 2012 and who is unable to register his death because there is no body (your report, 6 March). Has the law been changed?
