What if…

David Stevenson (Letters, 1 November) is right: we do live in “interesting times”, given the
latest opinion poll figures, especially with the recent news that the First Minister hasn’t “ruled out” a return to Westminster.

Perhaps it’s appropriate to use our political imagination and ask a few “what if” questions.

What if the nationalists win more Westminster seats in the general election next May?

Also, what if the SNP was the largest party to form a “balance of power coalition?”

Crucially, what if by moving to Westminster Alex Salmond were to find himself Deputy Prime Minister?

Would we ever have imagined that Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg would become Deputy Prime Minister?

Funnily, Alexander McCall Smith, in one of his novels, talks about using our imagination to ask “what if”.
