What a joke

Stewart Lee is to be commended for his attack on the Edinburgh Fringe "Comedy God" award (your report, 21 July).

A Top of the Pops-style poll rating would only serve to reinforce the anodyne culture that nuanced, subtle and provocative comics such as Lee aim to subvert.

Can we expect other areas of the festival to be defaced in this way?

Perhaps Alasdair Gray fancies a stint as "Literature God", A C Grayling as "Philosophy God" and Richard Dawkins as "Science God". The boring tendency to compile lists regarding every aspect of cultural life is to be dismissed as moribund.
