Well-spoken

Robert Pate (Letters, 12 January) appears to be obsessed by the notion that "Scotch" is the "correct" word to describe his nationality. This word now sounds old-fashioned and provincial.

Whether any Scots words are currently regarded as "correct" is certainly a question to be decided by professional lexicographers. The origin of "Scotch" is discussed in the Scottish National Dictionary. It is evidently a corruption derived from old Scots, Scottis.
