Weighty article

Perhaps Professor Peter Higgs – the scientist behind the hypothesis, proof of which is key to understanding our universe – has achieved as much in one short article in a Spanish newspaper to promote the case for civilised debate as his ground-breaking scientific discovery in 1963, affirmed this year as the Higgs boson (your article, 28 December)

Prof Higgs’ declaration that he is “embarrassed” by Professor Richard Dawkins’ atheistic fundamentalism will come as a great relief to many at a time in history when our political and social elite seem to be more entrenched than ever in their “rightness”.

Whether the subject is gun control or independence, economic stimulus or cut-back, pro- or anti gay marriage, the measured voices of reason desperately need to be heard above the vitriol that so often fuels division that can result in psychological and even physical damage.

Who has the respect and credibility to emerge in 2013 to be champions of a more civilised discourse?
