Weapons debate

Dr John Cameron (Letters, 3 June) calls the talk of Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass
destruction (WMDs) merely “a pack of lies”.

But most of Saddam’s generals believed he had them, as did most of the world’s intelligence agencies and indeed the tragic Dr David Kelly (who knew the Iraqi situation better than any of us).

I believe most experts still
accept that Saddam retained the capability to reactivate his WMD plans at short notice.

That the talk turned out to be untruths or even exaggerations does not necessarily mean the speakers were liars.
