Iain McLean and others (Perspective, 17 April) write: “But for North Sea oil, Scotland would probably not now be
facing the choices it is.”
Indeed. It seems probable to me that if the oil had never been found Scotland would have got devolution in 1979 and would be independent by now.
The fierce opposition to devolution in the 1970s came largely from Labour MPs who wanted to keep the wealth from oil under London-based UK control.
