‘We want
increased
powers’ demand islanders

This is the greatest news
story I have ever read. It’s
Shetland’s oil. I 100 per cent
support them leaving and
becoming a nation on their
own.

- In terms of the debate

This has nothing to do with
the people of Shetland or Orkney etc. It’s about some greedy
councillors pondering how to increase their budgets and extract taxes from the local industries.

This looks like an
orchestrated prelude to the northern isles becoming a Crown dependency like the Falklands with an associated referendum on whether they wish to remain “British”.

Why not give these islands
their own independence

The oil reserves will always
be a problem. Strictly speaking it is the UK that has dictated the extent of UK protected waters so it should have an interest in the income generated.

There is a clear need for
peripheral communities to take more direct care of their particular interests and concerns. They are key to the survival of our
fishing industry and will play
a large role in the future
renewables industry offshore.

Alex Salmond has provided
them with a blueprint. See the Isle of Man.

Odd how the Scottish
Nationalist says “it’s our oil” when in actual fact it’s a little more localised than that. The same is true for whisky. Nationalism is only allowed to divide until the divide suits those who are doing the dividing.
