We can’t bank on rugby success

ON SUNDAY I watched Scotland go down yet again at Murrayfield and speculated whether playing on a pitch dominated by the RBS logo and with smaller versions emblazoned across their shirts, perhaps our national team plays at a psychological disadvantage.

Regularly promoting failure on this scale must surely be contagious. Enquiries reminded me that on the eve of announcing the largest loss in corporate history in 2008 and already part nationalised, RBS agreed a £20 million, four-year sponsorship of the Six Nations and the Scotland team.

Driven by the same logic that pays bonuses to bankers for losing, and still losing taxpayers’ money hand over fist, one can only hope RBS is soon put out of our misery.

No wonder the Scottish rugby team is confused, I certainly am.
