Wasteful practices

The moral high ground so commendably held by Fiona Scott (Letters, 22 October) rarely coincides with the reality of business.

If the food discarded by Tesco has been paid for by it, and its supply chains have derived economic benefit, there is no harm done.

Of more concern are the point of sale promotions used by most supermarkets to make their customers buy more than they need, so that food wasted is at the customer’s expense.

This is why the competitive straight pricing of the smaller supermarkets and independent stores is popular with single people and those on a budget.
