Waste not

We increasingly hear of the need to cut government waste in order to save money. Perhaps we should look at our annual contribution to the European Union.

A friend of mine recently joined the EU in Brussels as a secretary. On her first day, she was given some basic typing. By lunchtime she had finished what she had been allocated and returned expecting to be given more for the afternoon. Instead she was told: "that work was supposed to last you a month".

One wonders how many other government Departments run along similar lines.
