Warming planet

Roy Turnbull (Letters, 11 February) continues to insult readers’ intelligence when he claims global temperatures are likely to increase by 2.6 to 4.8 degrees C due to our continued use of fossil fuels.

Two facts destroy this claim. The first is that there has been no increase in global temperatures for 19 years, a fact agreed by the UK Met Office. The second is that carbon emissions by the human use of fossil fuels are dwarfed by carbon emissions from natural events such as volcanic eruption.

Mr Parkin is quite correct in his view that we must look after the needs of today’s humanity rather than fulminate over the ever more unlikely future potential implications.
