Vintage Hoggart

Not only did parliamentary sketch writer Simon Hoggart appreciate his wine (Obituaries, 7 January), he enjoyed a Scotch. During one political party conference in Blackpool, he was mistakenly introduced on the Today programme as the Guardian’s Scotch writer. This was too good an opportunity to let pass.

He sought out the Scotch Whisky Association, and an impromptu whisky tasting was arranged in the midst of the conference mêlée, allowing him to file not just his musings on political goings-on, but a separate piece on the wonders of Scotch Whisky.
