View destroyed

I write in reply to the letter by Andrew HN Gray (12 March) reminding us of “the beautiful, Venetian-style Life Association building on Princes Street which was demolished in the 1960s”.

In the 1860s William Donaldson Clark was inspired by the two styles of architecture to take this beautiful photograph (top).

A few years ago I went to the same spot in the grounds of the National Gallery and was shocked at the difference, shown here – a perfect example of civic vandalism.
