University costs

I suspect that Lord Sewell (Letters, 29 August) knows that it is current SNP policy for an independent Scotland to be a member of the EU.

If that policy should be revised, it would be more likely to be over fishery policies than over student fees.

Assuming that both Scotland and England (or the rest of the UK) remain members of the EU after independence, then students from England would indeed need to be treated as students from other EU countries. Possible ways of requiring such students to contribute to the cost of their university education, within the rules of the EU, are being investigated by the Scottish Government.

I am a university teacher. I welcome students from England at our universities and consider that they make useful contributions to Scotland socially, academically and economically.
