Unite to agree on new name
REVIEWING Linda Colley’s latest book, Acts Of Union, Acts Of Disunion (Spectrum, 29 December), David Robinson notes her slightly off-the-wall suggestion of a “federal” United Kingdom. He then goes on to suggest that it be named Islands of the North Atlantic (or IONA – geddit?).
Apart from the predictable objections from Iona, Ireland, Iceland and Greenland, is it conceivable that Westminster would ever go along with a federal system?
After a Yes vote on 18 September, it will be necessary to come up quickly with a name for the rest of the United Kingdom – perhaps ROTUK? Or maybe England, Wales and Northern Ireland could be renamed EWANISTAN.
