Union’s U-turn

Unison’s U-turn on the local government pensions dispute (your report, 7 October) highlights that its members in Scotland do not count as far as the political leadership of the union is concerned.

Following the spending review when the SNP government decided against increasing the contribution rates for the local government pension, Unison in Scotland was widely reported as saying that would mean no strike action in Scotland on this issue.

However, a few days later it performed a U-turn, calling for strike action even though its Scottish members had won a significant deal from the Scottish Government.

Now they are to be led out on to the streets, disrupting the lives of those who rely on vital public services, simply to make a political point against the coalition government in Westminster!
