Unfair play

Despite the R&A’s research which suggests that the price of £75 for a day’s ticket to Muirfield golf course was “acceptable,” I would assert it was the main reason for the drop in attendance over the four days at the Open Championship last year (Sport, 28 March).

A reduction of 18,000 spectators compared to the 2002 Championship at Muirfield would perhaps suggest that it’s not because the course is “out in the sticks” when compared to the likes of Royal Liverpool and the other Lancashire venues.

So, I return to the price and an important fact that the senior concession was removed some years ago. Reinstating this “incentive” would make quite a difference.
