Unfair label

Neil Sinclair (Letters, 2 May) says that George Orwell fought “against Franco’s nationalists” in Spain.

I admire those who fought against Franco’s overthrow of the elected government of Spain. Franco was opposed by, among others, Basque, Catalan and Galician nationalists/
patriots.

Unfortunately, the word
“nationalism” appears to have several conflicting interpretations. Those who would impose their rule on people of other nationalities might better be
described as imperialists.
