Underwhelmed

From a distance of 12,000 miles and a time lapse of over 60 years since I left Scotland, the referendum issue is reminiscent of the romantic dreams of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 which ended in tears at Culloden.

In a world in which we in Australia are negotiating free trade agreements with our Asian neighbours, in which Western nations are banding together to tackle the tax-dodging devices of international companies, the concept of brave little Scotland going it alone seems irrational and bizarre.

One line I still remember from my degree in Political Science at St Andrews is from Elmer Eric Schattschneider: “Independence is a synonym for ineffectiveness in a game in which teamwork produces results.”
