U-turn on tax

Peter Geoghegan’s article about the SNP’s plans to lower corporation tax (Perspective, 12 June) reminded me that the First Minister had recently recalled his expulsion from the House of Commons chamber for interrupting Nigel Lawson’s 1988 Budget speech. He had taken exception to the announcement of a cut in corporation tax for small companies to 25 per cent, branding it “an obscenity”. Odd, then, that he now appears to consider lowering corporation tax to 17 per cent to be an essential and admirable goal.
