Tree-mendous

RSPB Scotland’s expansion of native woodland at Abernethy through the planting of 100,000 trees (your report, 14 April) is a valuable project that deserves to be applauded.

Just 4 per cent of Scotland is covered by native trees and increasing this area in a way that benefits people and wildlife should be one of the country’s top priorities.

The Caledonian forest is symbolised by Scots pine, but broadleaved species including alder, birch and willow are equally important components within this habitat.

Increasing the diversity of the forest is an essential part of the project.
