Travellers’ woes

Mr D Robin (Letters, 24 October) is just one of many whose rail journeys are disrupted by the thoughtless use of alcohol, loud music or very noisy conversations.

Alcohol is banned on buses and coaches. Why not on the railways, especially when youngsters are also on the train? After all, the Scottish Government is rightly trying to reduce the unacceptable effects of alcohol on the nation.I have seen railway guards evicting troublemakers, but generally at Perth, Elgin or Dundee where the staff can relay on police assistance. Others hide away in the rear cab. This option is not available on the West Highland Line.

Many overseas railways issue a behaviour guideline leaflet regarding the use of mobile phones, alcohol and child behaviour. This is urgently needed in Scotland.
