Tram vanity

Here we go again. Just when we thought common sense would prevail, that vanity project called “The Trams” is back on the agenda (your report, 15 September).

Once again we must endure months of inconvenience and disruption, with the city divided along Princes Street as effectively as the Wall once divided Berlin.

It’s a good job these beautiful, environmentally-friendly new buses can be diverted so easily to accommodate all this inevitable chaos, and allow the building of an overpriced, inflexible and unneccessary single tram line to enable those in Saughton easy access to (almost) the airport or to Harvey Nichols.

Surely by now the City Council has lost so much credibility as the body elected to look after the interests of Edinburgh and to manage its finances that the time has come to demand more independent councillors prepared to vote to meet the wishes of their electorate, not simply to meet party dogma.
