Tram shame

Simon Johnston, editor of Tramways and Urban Transit magazine, writes that “Edinburgh needs trams” and cites the existence of trams in other entirely different UK cities as some sort of proof (Analysis, 12 April).

I doubt if he actually lives in Edinburgh, because he doesn’t understand the geography of the place. Who on earth does he think is going to travel on them?

Regrettably the tramway will open one day, five years after which it will be sold to First Bus for £1. You can guess the rest.

Presumably Simon Johnston meant to say that the importance of the tram scheme should not be underestimated.

But what he did say – that it cannot be underestimated – is actually correct, because the importance of the now drastically truncated line is already nil.
