The demise of Torphin Hill Golf Club (your report, 7 January) was sad news indeed. As a member in the 1990s, I used to delight when asked if I was a member of a golf club by replying: “I am a member of one of the top clubs in Edinburgh.”

The perception of the listener, that I was pretentious, was immediately dispelled when I said which club. They got the joke – you could not get much more top than Torphin.

They did say it was so high that God was an associate member. Perhaps that’s why the views across his own country were so breathtaking. THGC RIP.
