Timely reminder

THE controversy about the sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service (your report, 12 December) highlights how much people who are deaf rely on receiving appropriately qualified communication support.

In Scotland, 13,000 British Sign Language (BSL) users have the legal right under the Equality Act 2010 to get the same level 
of access and service as other people.

It’s vital that all public services and businesses make “reasonable adjustments” to meet the individual communication needs of people who are deaf or have hearing loss.
