Thatcher legacy

Allan Massie once claimed to be a unionist in his heart but a nationalist in his head. Why does he (Opinion, 23 March) try to show that Scotland is just as weak financially as the rest of the UK and would have been so even with independence?

Has he forgotten that the Thatcher government used Scotland's oil wealth to finance the dole for all the jobless caused by her destruction of UK manufacturing and that New Labour has carried on that policy?
