Taxing questions

To the letter (2 May) rightly questioning Westminster’s slashing of poorer people’s benefits while letting the very highly paid pay less tax can be added HMRC’s reported deals with large enterprises so that they pay many millions of tax but not necessarily their full whack – seemingly so that HMRC gets quite a lot relatively quickly rather then enter into years of haggling for a fuller payment.

Additionally, there are of course the tax avoiders with their ingenious wheezes to take advantage of other countries’ “tax haven” lower tax rates
rather than pay the higher rates of countries like the UK – thus hindering rather than helping to cut back accumulated debts in the countries where they make their money.
