Taxing criticism

Gavin McCrone (Perspective, 22 September) states that “reducing corporation tax for firms north of the Border will encourage growth”, which in itself is big news.

However, the sentence continues with a “but” and then descends into the realms of how awful the English might be if such a step was to be taken.

This is shocking anti-English behaviour and really should have no place in any newspaper in modern Scotland, especially as, in reality, England would benefit by having a yet more prosperous neighbour on its border.

It was of further fascination that Gavin McCrone informs us that 42 years ago Scottish CBI wanted corporation tax lowered to “promote economic development in Scotland”.

However, this seems to have been a time when the CBI was taken seriously in Scotland.
