Talking nonsense

I cannot agree more with Barry Hunter (Letters, 24 February) regarding the liberal abuse of the words “absolutely” and “like” in everyday conversation.

Not so long ago a radio presenter or DJ would give a “mention” to a listener, or play them a “request” or “dedication”.

These words now seem to have become obsolete, in this context, in favour of giving a “shout out”. The phrase is totally meaningless as the volume of the presenter’s voice never increases.

Languages are constantly evolving, but we should ensure that during the process they continue to make sense.
