Talk of the Town: Tram is not going Sir Sean's way

SIR Sean Connery must have been spending too much time in the sun. When asked about the burning issue in Edinburgh he looked bemused before his press people moved in and suggested our reporter had no right to accost him as he toured the site of his former home in Fountainbridge.

Not something to bother millionaires who spend their time in Bermuda, but there was a time the tram lines might have impeded his milk run around the Capital. What about that Sir Sean?

This lost picture of Wayne McFadden and Alison Mitchell at the 1970s contest surfaced during the filming of the new Northern Soul movie Soulboy, which premieres at the Film Festival on Saturday.

The producers have invited the pair to show up at the premiere and after-party at the Traverse Theatre – and even show the stars how it's done on the dance-floor.

Breeding season kicks off

IT'S the breeding season for the cassowary – a large flightless bird from the tropics of New Guinea and Australia and a popular resident at Edinburgh Zoo.

Colin Oulton, head keeper for birds at Edinburgh Zoo said: "The cassowary is a solitary bird and pairs only come together to breed. The male is immediately disadvantaged due to the female being at least a third larger. Her size and strength means that a kick could fatally injure the male.

"The male and female are kept in separate enclosures and when the keepers observed nesting signs we considered introducing them.

In the coming weeks, keepers will attempt to introduce the pair."

News from breakfast table

SCOTLAND didn't make it to the World Cup finals but according to Edinburgh-born radio presenter Nicky Campbell there is at least one visual link between his home city and the global sporting jamboree.

"I'm beside Table Mountain" said Campbell during a broadcast from Cape Town this week on BBC 5-live "and it looks a bit like Salisbury Crags."
