Talk of the Town: A chip off the old rugby block

WATSONIANS ever green rugby star Gary Scott has finally realised an ambition by turning out in the same club team as his teenage son, Chris.

At 47, restauranteur Gary was reckoned to be the oldest player in the Premiership last season and a desire to compete alongside Chris was cited by him as the reason for his longevity.

Now the pair have finally stood shoulder to shoulder as 'Sonian 2nds defeated West of Scotland 2nds 15-11 in Glasgow.

IT'S a long way from here to the Munich Oktoberfest, but those who can't make the trip could do worse than popping into the Caledonian Beer Festival.

The week-long party starts on October 7 at The Steading, Bert's Bar and the Southsider, with cask beers including Deuchars IPA, Caledonian 80/-, Mellow Yellow, Oktoberbest and Autumn Red all on offer. Lederhosen optional.

A. Nutter writes..

A RECENT posting on online council complaints portal Fix My Street says: "Dear Council, I can hear nature and see trees. This is outrageous. Make them go away."

The posting is signed "A. Nutter, Edinburgh". We would be grateful if Mr Nutter lets us know when the council gets round to abolishing nature.

No sporting sausages

A SEARCH to identify Scotland's greatest sporting moment has been launched by the charity scotcare, which helps first and second-generation Scots living in London and follows the success of a similar poll last year.

The 2009 remit was to identify "Scotland's greatest contribution to the world" and saw Penicillin take the crown beating Irn Bru, television and Lorne sausage.

We trust there are no equivalents to the flat sausage in a long list that includes some of Edinburgh's most distinguished icons, from Sir Chris Hoy to Eric Liddell and Allan Wells to Ken Buchanan.

Sam outfoxed by a cat

LOTHIANS sunseekers who are planning to jet off to Thailand on holiday might want to take heed of some travel advice from 80s glamour icon Samantha Fox.

Sherecently suffered a rabies scare when she was bitten by cat while on holiday there.

She said: "I fed the cat some scraps of food from my plate, and thought we were getting on well as it sat by my feet.

"As I went to stroke the cat, it bit me so hard the wound went down to the bone."

Let that be a lesson to you.
