Tactical voting

In saying that Alexander McKay wants everyone to vote Conservative I think Douglas Turnbull (Letters, 23 February) is being a trifle unfair.

In pursuit of his crusade against the evil “nationalists” Mr McKay is, in effect, urging Conservatives to vote Lib Dem or even Labour where that is necessary to see off the SNP.

I would not be surprised if Conservative supporters in constituencies such as Edinburgh West have not already been voting tactically to keep Labour out.

Why waste one’s vote supporting a candidate with no hope of winning when that vote could be used to elect the least objectionable of the candidates in the running?

Is there a chance, I wonder, that the current turmoil might edge the two main UK parties towards some reform of our antiquated and undemocratic first-past-the-post voting system?
