Strong measures

John Eoin Douglas (Letters, 15 October) says he would vote for Ukip if it promised to get rid of the metric system. I would not want Scotsman readers to think that this view is shared by all pensioners.

The metric system has been of inestimable value to the whole of all aspects of modern life.

I would go further and say that I would vote for a party which promised to ban all use of stones, pounds and ounces, miles, yards, feet and inches, gallons and pints, and degrees Fahrenheit – and I am 92.
