Stein offside

With reference to Andy Dunlop’s obituary of Davie White (19 July), the assertion that Mr White’s Rangers side entered its last fixture of the 1967-68 Scottish League campaign “without the talismanic Colin Stein” is correct, but also erroneous.

Stein was not available for selection to play for Rangers against Aberdeen on Saturday, 27 April, 1968, because he was still a Hibernian player. The record £100,000 transfer between two Scottish football clubs was still over six months away. Stein did not sign for Rangers until 31 October, 1968.

Perhaps Mr Dunlop was confused by the Scottish Football Association suspension being served by Stein during the closing weeks of the 1968-69 football season in Scotland?
