Status symbol

It never fails to amaze me that some people are still naive enough to swallow the old story that Trident is all about defence (Letters, 6 July). Tony Blair himself said that reason and logic pointed to getting rid of nuclear weapons but “the downgrading of our status as a nation” was too big a price to pay.

Trident’s only function is as an icon of British nationalism. Most other countries happily eschew such expensive dangerous and immoral symbols of superiority.
