State guardians

The Christian Institute is to be commended for seeking a judicial review of the SNP government’s decision to appoint a state guardian for every child in Scotland (your report, 9 July)

This legislation effectively sanctions official surveillance of family life with disturbing echoes of nationalist regimes in the 1930s and post-war communist states.

I am also concerned at the
lack of checks and balances which might prevent bourgeois guardians imposing their rules on the raising of working-class children.

The new law is clearly contrary to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 12: “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, or home.”
