SSPCA’s wide role

Alison Pearson (Letters, 13 Aug-ust) asks for the Scottish SPCA to clarify its remit.

I can confirm that the Scottish SPCA helps all sick, injured, abandoned, abused and neglected animals in Scotland.

We do not, as Ms Pearson suggested, concentrate solely on cruelty cases.

In 2012, our investigations led to 173 cases being dealt with by the Scottish courts.

However, we also cared for 13,327 animals, attended more than 57,000 incidents, took more than 195,000 calls from members of the public, found 6,248 animals loving new homes, reunited 1,130 lost pets with their owners and we also released 2,138 animals back into the wild.

Last year, we opened our
new £3.5 million Wildlife
Rescue Centre at Fishcross,
Alloa, which was paid for purely by donations, expanded our Highlands and Islands Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Inverness and spoke to more than 260,000 school children as part of our Prevention Through Education programme.
