Sràid of shame

With reference to your report on Gaelic (13 May), I was in Ullapool for the Book
Festival at the weekend, and was disappointed to note that in some of the street name signs the Gaelic form was so badly weathered that only a few letters were visible.

I was also puzzled to see that on two name plates in Ladysmith Street, one gave the Gaelic form as Sràid Bean a’Ghobhainn and the other (the newer) as Sràid Ladysmith.

In the town which hosts one of the finest annual
literary events in Scotland, the Gaelic signage should be up to the same standard.
