Spur for thought

I think I have a solution, though regrettably only partial, to both of Scotland’s embarrassing transport problems.

I read in your columns about the desperate search for a use for Edinburgh’s extravagant and largely redundant tram fleet. And we are all aware of the ever more delayed Borders rail line.

Why not change the specification of the revived Waverley line to a “light railway” or tramway – then use the redundant city trams to provide the service?

The new line was only ever going to be a lightly-used spur, on a single track. A relatively minor re-think of the Edinburgh terminus arrangements would complete an elegant, if only partial, solution to the huge, and increasing cost, of both projects.
