THE very last thing the Liberal Democrats needed after a most disastrous result in the European elections – just one seat in the whole of the United Kingdom – was a challenge to their leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

Lord Oakeshott must have been prompted by the example of his old Labour pals to press the “self-destruct” ­button to put the Liberal Democrats’ leadership in meltdown just when party solidarity is most needed to plan for the 2015 general elections.
