Speed is a waste

My understanding is that the faster you drive, and certainly above 60 miles per hour, the greater the fuel consumption.

It is hard to understand, therefore, why the government should wish to consider raising the maximum national speed limit to 80mph, increasing not only fuel consumption but pollution and waste of an ever- declining and finite primary resource.

It is difficult to understand why drivers should wish to drive at this speed either, given the ever-rising cost of fuel. Or do a lot of drivers have deeper pockets than we imagine?
