Sovereign rights

Robert Dow claims the sovereign right of the people "is nonsense" when politicians can make their own rules (Letters, 25 January). It makes even less sense when you ask: "Which people?". Do the people of Shetland have the right to become independent of both Scotland and the United Kingdom? Could the people of Yorkshire declare independence?

The only group that can properly be qualified to vote on the future of the UK is the whole population. Selecting one group, eg Scotland, is prejudicial.
