While it could be argued, as does Alan Hinnrichs (“Western blame”, Letters, 24 August) that US policies may be partially to blame for the current refugee problem afflicting Europe, his sideswipe that it is equally due to “Israel’s hegemonic policies in the Middle East and North Africa” is ludicrous unless one takes it as self-evident that Israel is the source of all evil.

That myth – that the world is in the grip of a Jewish conspiracy – used to be considered as merely the antisemitic ranting of the ­Fascist Right.

Unfortunately, it has now also become the default position of too many of the self-styled “progressive” friends of the Palestinians.
